Skagfield came from Iceland with her husband, Hilmar, in 1950. He studied accounting but she, with broken English, was unable to continue her profession in midwifery. Skagfield opened a small dressmaking shop instead, which eventually grew into a successful design studio and clothing store, outfitting governors' wives, May Day queens, and offering a unique selection of custom clothing for Florida's capital.

Skagfield lent her success to charitable causes such as the Leukemia Society, the Pilot Club, the Kiwanis Club, and the Women's Club, where her fashion shows were typically sold-out affairs to benefit the community. She and her husband helped found St. Stephen's Lutheran Church on Meridian Road.

Donna Harper Askew wore a yellow gown designed by Skagfield to her husband's second gubernatorial inaugural ball. The dress and matching coat are now a part of the Museum of Florida History's collection.
